Steps to Taming y0ur Mouse:
- Let your mouse get used to its surroundings
the first day you get him/her home.
- Start by gently talking to the mouse until he/she appears comfortable with the sound of your voice.
- Open the cage and put your hand flat on the bottom of the cage with a small treat on it.
- When the mouse finally comes onto your hand, slowly lift it up. It may jump off of your hand,
in which case you just start all over again with the treat.
- When the mouse finally lets you take him/her out of the cage, he/she may be a bit nervous but
will soon curiously explore his/her new friend (you)!
What to Keep Your Mouse In:
- Critter Trail Cage (the ones with
the tubes)--Most expensive generally
- Aquarium with a mesh or plastic lid--Best for beginners
- Wire Cage--can escape if bars are more than ¼” apart
Breeding your Mouse:
Disclaimer: No mouse should be bred unless you know
its history or if the breeder says not to breed him/her.
- Female mice should be bred no sooner than 8-10 weeks of age and only
if you know what you are doing. Breeding is not for amateurs. The average mouse has a litter of 10, sometimes up to almost
20 mice.
- The female mouse comes into heat every 3-4 days. From the date of mating,
it takes about 21 days (3 weeks) for the babies to be born. The babies should not be touched until they’re at least
a week old and ONLY if the mom has been very friendly with you during the whole time. Mom can be taken out and played with
for short intervals after the birth.
- The babies should be removed from mom when they are 4 weeks old and separated
by gender at that time.
- The girls can stay with mom, but the males must have their own cage, and eventually you will have to have a cage
for each male.
